After I click home icon, when i go to a Top/side view, the camera is a reasonable 100 units away in the Z axis, and the objects dont jump around. the other thing it does (which isn't well documented) is apparently it resets your model space's outer boundaries, and your camera viewpoint to a known position in space from the origin (i think its something you can change in the template file). While it doesn't seem like it does much other than move your camera back to the origin. The only fix i've found for this is to click the "Home" icon next to the view cube.
